Every day I walk through the small cobblestone square known as Gänsemarkt (literally translated Geese Market) on my way to work. Quite often you seen stalls erected here for various events and it is the location of one of Hamburg’s many Weihnnachtmarkts (Christmas Markets). Usually the stalls take only a day to assemble, so I was surprised to see construction go on in the square for 4 days. They brought in sand and large concrete blocks plus the usual stalls. This morning, all of the construction work was finished to reveal – a Beach Club. Even though Gänsemarkt is nowhere near a beach, they had constructed a beach club surrounded by sand and containing a mini wading pool/seating area, plus the club has 10 food stands, free WiFi and apparently a gym.
Isn’t it impressive? All this construction work was done so the Beach Club could remain at Gänsemarkt for 10 days only. As far as I can tell, it is there for no particular purpose. Just a random beach club in a cobblestone square. This is one of the things I love about living in Hamburg, that random things like this are built all the time. You can frequently find little stalls set up all over the city. They go up for a weekend, maybe two and then disappear again. It makes wandering around the city a true adventure.
